The word Sustainability is an umbrella term that encompasses many different ideas. The common theme of these diverse ideas, when we think of Sustainability as a cultural value that we should all strive to attain, is that Sustainability means developing, implementing, and promoting practices in all areas of life that conserve resources, maximize efficiencies, and create an environment that can maintain itself in perpetuity.
At the center of the idea of Sustainability is an appreciation of humanity and personal responsibility. It takes human capital and hard work to create and maintain Sustainable environments—whether those environments are in an office, in a community space, or out in the woods.
At SKYCTC, the Sustainability Committee is charged with leading the campus community in developing and promoting Sustainable practices across campus.

Local Sustainability Statement
The SKYCTC Sustainability Committee seeks to establish a culture of sustainability on campus by supporting initiatives that:
The primary responsibility of SKYCTC’s Sustainability Committee is to develop, implement, and update the Local Sustainability Plan. The Committee is also responsible for supporting the implementation of new sustainability projects; disseminating information from the Systems Office to SKYCTC faculty, staff, and students; and pursuing the mission outlined in the Local Sustainability Statement.
SKYCTC Sustainability Spotlights, Spring 2014
Focus Area: Participation in National, Regional, or Local Sustainability Campaigns or Competitions
SKYCTC participates in a recycling drive. The college encourages students, employees, and the community to bring in recyclable goods and deposit them in single sort recycling bins that are placed around campus. This initiative was pursued to promote the importance of recycling and raise awareness about living more sustainable lifestyles. The college has recycled thousands of pounds of waste through its participation in this initiative.
B. Outreach and Service
Focus Area: Civic Organizations
SKYCTC was one of eight disc golf courses in Bowling Green / Warren County to host the annual Amateur Disc Golf Championship Tournament on April 11th – 13th. The disc golf course at SKYCTC has earned high praise for its beautiful layout. Since the disc golf course's creation, it has helped to draw the community to campus and to promote active lifestyles. This year's ADGC Tournament at the SKYCTC disc golf course will bring even more people from the community and beyond to campus and demonstrate SKYCTC's commitment to sustainable lifestyles and community engagement.

Focus Area: Incorporation of Sustainability Principles into Existing Curricula
Spring 2014 SKYCTC Book Club Selection: The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, by William Kamkwamba
As a campus-wide QEP-led reading initiative, the SKYCTC Book Club read The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba during the Spring 2014 semester. This book has striking themes of sustainability throughout, including: drought which leads to hunger, harnessing wind and solar energy, and sustainable agriculture. Set in Malawi, the book draws attention to how one boy’s efforts toward sustainable energy practices helped lift his family and community out of poverty. This inspiring story was read throughout the six SKYCTC locations through programs which included: embedded curriculum in eight RDG 030 courses; instructor-led curriculum incorporation in courses such as Art , Psychology, and Sociology; and SKYCTC Book Club led book giveaways and discussions, including online participation options.
SKYCTC instructor Chris Royse teaches an e-waste unit in his Information Technology classes each semester. The goal of this unit is to educate students about the production, use, and potential for re-use of the natural resources that compose today's high-tech electronics. In this unit, students learn how electronics are produced and how these products could be recycled and reused to create more sustainable IT products. Royse is interested in expanding this unit and creating a program by which students would actually participate in recycling used computers to learn more in-depth about creating a more sustainable IT economy.
D. Student Opportunities
Focus Area: Establishment of Sustainability-Related Student Organizations
The SKYCTC Green Team is a student organization that promotes sustainability awareness on campus. The small group of students involved with this student organization is active in discussing, promoting, and developing sustainability-mindedness on all six of the SKYCTC campuses and on the web with their Facebook page.
E. Faculty and Staff Development

Focus Area: Energy Efficiency, Energy Management, and Energy Efficiency Controls
Prior to the SKYCTC institutional closing over the end of year and New Year's holiday season, the SKYCTC Sustainability Committee promoted an initiative that we called a Conservation Vacation. This initiative had several goals: to raise awareness about how much energy our computers, printers, and other office technology use, even when no one is on campus; to encourage employees to shut down and unplug office electronics; to save energy resources through increased efficiencies and, in turn, to save the college money; and to promote sustainability as a matter of practice on all SKYCTC campuses. The Sustainability Committee worked with members of the IT Support Staff to develop a responsible conservation plan. This initiative was promoted at staff and faculty Senate meetings and through a series of emails. There were no metrics for measuring the success of the campaign, but the Conservation Vacation campaign was at least successful in raising sustainability awareness and promoting a more efficient use of energy resources.
